The PlayStation Analog Joystick (SCPH-1110) is Sony's first analog controller for the PlayStation and the precursor to the PlayStation Dual Analog Controller. It is often mistakenly referred to as the "Sony Flightstick" (not to be confused with third-party peripheral manufacturer Hori's line of Flightstick joysticks for PlayStation consoles).
The analog stick uses potentiometer technology previously used on consoles such as the Vectrex; rather than relying on eight-way binary switches, the controller is able to detect tiny angular changes across the entire range of motion. The stick also features a thumb-operated digital hat switch on the right stick, corresponding to the traditional D-pad, and used in cases where simple digital movements were needed. A compatibility mode for the analog stick was included in the Dual Analog Controller, Sony's first analog revision of the original gamepad design. PS1 games that support the PS1 analog stick have an "Analog Stick Compatible" icon on the back cover. The analog stick has a switch to select analog or digital mode. In digital mode, both sticks function as gamepads on a regular PS1 controller. Older PS1 games that do not support the PS1 DualShock sticks can function with the analog stick.
