The internal workings of the new PS3 system have been completely redesigned, from the semiconductors and the power supply to the cooling system, making the design significantly thinner and lighter possible. Compared to the first PS3 model with a 60 GB hard drive, the volume, width and also the weight have been reduced by approximately two-thirds. In addition, power consumption has been reduced by a third and at the same time the volume of the ventilation system has been reduced.

Although the elegant, arched design of the original model has been retained, the new PS3 system also impresses with its textured surface and decidedly casual look. With its compact shape and casual look, the new model is aimed at a significantly wider audience who can expect a perfect entertainment system for the home.

The new PS3 system has increased storage capacity, giving users the ability to store more games, music, photos, videos and other content and services available on PlayStation Network. With over 27 million registered accounts worldwide, PlayStation Network will offer more than 15,000 digital content including games, trailers and demos, as well as over 15,000 films and TV series via PlayStation Store from the end of July 2009.

PlayStation Network members also have the option to download free applications such as PlayStation Home or Life with PlayStation. The former is a three-dimensional, social, reference gaming community where users can interact, communicate and share gaming experiences, while Vita with PlayStation engages users by connecting the PS3 system to the Internet via the living room television, providing a wealth of news and information.

Since the release of the PS3 system in November 2006, the number of titles released on disc has increased to over 1,000, and the number of downloadable PS3 games has increased to over 1,400 worldwide thanks to the support of numerous other game developers and publishers.
