Diddy Kong amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. Collection.
Amiibo is Nintendo's toy platform. It consists of a wireless communication and storage protocol for connecting toys to Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch video game consoles. The platform was launched in November 2014 in the form of system software updates and a range of Amiibo-enabled characters. These figures are similar in form and functionality to those in the Skylanders and Disney Infinity toy series. It has been announced that the Amiibo platform could accommodate any form of toy, especially master plans for future card games. These toys use Near Field Communication (NFC) to interact with supported game software.
Amiibo functionality can be used directly with Nintendo Switch, Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS consoles using the built-in NFC readers. Additionally, the rest of the 3DS hardware can use an official NFC adapter. As of September 2016, Nintendo reported 39 million Amiibo toys and more than 30 million Amiibo cards sold.
