History

It's a beautiful day in the Mushroom Kingdom, and Mario and Luigi decide to go out in the sky to hunt for coins. They fly like a charm, but as soon as they touch down, they realize that things aren't quite right - Princess Peach has been kidnapped by Bowser's henchmen! As usual, however, the kidnapper can only be Bowser, and it's up to Mario and Luigi to come to her rescue!

Actions

In this section you will find descriptions of some of the extraordinary abilities available to Mario!

Moving and Dashing - Use the Circle Pad or +Control Pad to move Mario. Hold down the X or Y Button while walking to accelerate and dash!

Jumping - Press the A or B button to jump, hold the button to jump a little higher, or jump while sprinting to go even higher! To do double or triple jumps, jump two or three times in a row while sprinting. Timing is essential and you can make some truly amazing jumps!

Swimming - Press the A or B button while underwater to swim, use the Circle Pad or +Control Pad to control direction.

Pick up an item - Walk towards an item while holding down the X or Y button to pick it up!

Ground Pound - To perform a powerful Ground Pound, press down on the +Control Pad or Circle Pad while in mid-air and… BOOM!

Game world

Mario-style action is fun for everyone, and it starts here! Your adventure begins in "World 1," but as you search for the kidnapped princess, you'll discover many more worlds after reaching the end of this world!

Levels - Your goal is to reach the Goal Pole at the bottom of each level by running, jumping, swimming, sliding, battling enemies, and more. Along the way, you'll need to collect as many coins as possible, and maybe even a few special Star Coins! Bowser's minions mustn't win, so dig in and keep moving to the right!

Toad's House - Those cute little rascals from the Mushroom Kingdom insist on building their homes in the most unlikely places, but luckily for you, they're very hospitable. If you collect the Star Coins needed to reach their house, you might just get your hands on 1-Up Mushrooms and other items that will help you on your quest.

Tower - Your journey through each World is hindered by these pesky structures. Each time you encounter a tower, you must climb to the top to face the challenge it holds.

Warp Cannon - What? You said a cannon? But how do you reach it and how far could it throw you?

Castle - The final level of each World is the Castle, where you'll battle one of Bowser's henchmen before continuing on to the next World.

Rainbow Levels - Some of the 80+ levels packed with classic Mario action in New Super Mario Bros. 2 are rainbow-themed!

Power-ups

In this brand new Mario adventure you can use numerous power-ups to gain various special abilities:

Super Mushroom - Grab one of these mushrooms to transform into Super Mario - not only will you grow bigger, you'll be able to take more damage from enemies!

Gold Flower - Pick a Gold Flower to transform into Gold Mario and throw golden fireballs that turn blocks or enemies into coveted coins! While playing Local Play with a friend, Gold Flowers transform Luigi into Silver Luigi.

Super Leaf - Hit bad guys with your tail, gently drop from a jump, or dash and jump to fly as Raccoon Mario. You can get all these amazing abilities by simply catching a Super Leaf.

Mini Mushroom - A Mini Mushroom turns you into Mini Mario! This miniaturized Mario can easily fit through the smallest openings, jump very high and even run on water.

Fire Flower - Pick a Fire Flower to become Fire Mario, then throw fireballs to clear a path through your enemies. Fireballs are so hot you can even use them underwater!

Mega Mushroom - When Mario eats a Mega Mushroom, he becomes the gigantic Mega Mario. Use your size to crush everything in your path.

Super Star - If you take this item, you will be invincible for a while and shine with all the colors of the rainbow!

Golden Block - If you hit a block multiple times, it will transform into a Golden Block that you can either: a) wear on your head to leave a trail of coins in your path, or b) use to Ground Pound to make a fountain of coins gush out!

When you're not using them, items are stored on the touch screen ready for when you need them.

Two players

Playing with a friend is a blast, plus it's a lot easier to rack up coins when you can (literally) lean on someone else to jump on. You can play an entire adventure with a friend in wireless mode, one as Mario and the other as Luigi.

During a two-player game, level progress is only saved in the file of the player controlling Mario, but any coins collected are added to each player's loot, so it's a great way to get closer to the magic million while having fun!

With a friend, you can pull off incredible moves that you couldn't do alone, like jumping off the other player's head to reach unprecedented heights or performing simultaneous Ground Pounds to take out all your enemies in one fell swoop.

When you are in trouble, you can tap the icon on the touch screen to enter a protective bubble, then you can safely float towards your friend who can also form a bubble. But be careful not to create bubbles at the same time or you will have to start the level over again!

Gold Rush

In this Mario adventure you can play in the Gold Rush mode!

The goal of the game is to complete three levels in one life, collecting as many coins as you can. Yes, you read that right - you only have one chance, no help, no 1-Ups, and no extra credits. If you make a mistake, you have to go back to the beginning of the level, so think carefully about your moves and your collection strategy!

The three Gold Rush levels are randomly selected from all the levels you've already completed, so it's not exactly a leap into the unknown! In the future, you'll also be able to purchase Gold Rush levels as add-on content and receive them via SpotPass.

StreetPass - Scores earned in Gold Rush challenges can be shared with other players via StreetPass, so you can see who the best coin collectors are and what records to beat. And best of all, if you beat another player's record, all the coins earned by that player up to that point will be added to your total coin bank!
