Crash Bandicoot has exploded onto your PlayStation and is immediately calling for your help. The evil Dr. Neo Cortex has kidnapped your bandicoot girlfriend for scientific purposes in a grand plot to take over the world. The nerve of some people is simply unbelievable! Needless to say, your mission is to rescue your sweetheart by traversing three different islands filled with over thirty levels and ultimately destroying the evil doctor.

The gameplay is handled through a linear 3D platformer, where linear means that each level has a distinctive path to completion with obstacles the player must overcome. These obstacles take the form of various platforms, sand pits, and disappearing bridges. Some stages are played from a side-scrolling perspective, while others are played from behind the bandicoot's back.

Sensing that Crash might be smarter than the average bandicoot, Cortex has created a veritable army of creatures to hinder the hero's progress. Each level features a variety of enemies, including turtles, penguins, carnivorous plants, and more. In addition to the basic enemies, there are a variety of boss characters with vicious temperaments. Ripper Roo is a genetically engineered kangaroo with blade-like claws, Papu Papu uses his size to strike fear into the hearts of men, and Pinstripe is a Tommy Gun-wielding gangster.

Each level contains various collectibles and hidden items found inside crates/boxes. By collecting enough gems and keys, the player will be rewarded at the end of a level—sometimes a bonus level, sometimes an extra life. Bonus rounds allow the bandicoot to earn various fruits and keys to unlock hidden levels. To unlock a bonus round, tokens must be collected in any level. A Witch Doctor has also placed his mysterious masks throughout the islands to aid Crash in his quest.
