NightCaster is a single-player third-person action-adventure game for Xbox, developed by VR1 Entertainment and published by Microsoft. Players take on the role of Arran, a novice wizard whose magical powers grow with age, on his quest to gather spells and free the world from eternal night.
The beginning of the story mode introduces the player to Arran, a young boy living in a small village. One day, Arran sneaks into a forest while playing hide-and-seek with his friends and stumbles upon a floating glowing sphere. The sphere informs him that he must embark on a quest to defeat the evil "Nightcaster." Arran is then placed in suspended animation (though he still ages) by the sphere, presumably to "get ready" to fight the Nightcaster.
Arran awakens, aged in his mid-twenties, to find his world ravaged by darkness and legions of monsters under the reign of the Night Wizard, wreaking havoc among the populace. Arran's parents are presumed dead when he discovers his home is a smoldering wreck, at which point the orb informs him that "it is the work of the Night Wizard." So he begins his quest, facing numerous creatures, and as he ages, his spells become stronger, more effective, and more expansive.
