Pokémon Red and LeafGreen take place primarily in the fictional Kanto region. It is a distinct region among the many in the Pokémon world, featuring various geographic habitats for Pokémon species, cities and towns populated by humans, and routes between locations. Some areas are only accessible if the player acquires a special item or if one of their Pokémon learns a special ability. Towards the end of the story, the protagonist can venture to the Sevii Islands, a new area not available in the original Red and Blue games. It is an archipelago of seven islands that contain Pokémon normally exclusive to the Johto region.
