The toy room is abuzz with a new contest: Andy has obtained a myriad of radio-controlled vehicles; Buzz Lightyear, Woody and the rest of the gang found these toy cars perfect for racing! These fearless animated characters ignored the potential danger and took refuge in their environment, even venturing onto a dangerous street and the dangerous Pizza Planet in a heated competition to find out which toy is the best driver. Released for PlayStation, Disney/Pixar's Toy Story Racer is a go-kart racing title that attempts to bring the action and environments of the animated classic to said console. Naturally for the genre, the various vehicles, characters and power-ups are not realistic nor do they attempt to be; instead, these things are arcade in nature and used in Mario Kart lore. Armchair karting enthusiasts will race through 18 courses and have access to various modes. Completing these modes will unlock a myriad of secrets. There are four different characters to choose from at the start, including the aforementioned duo, RC and Bo Peep. Once you have accumulated a certain number of tokens, other characters such as Rex, Mr. Potato Head and Slinky Dog will be available. Tokens are earned when certain challenge objectives are completed. Each character has various skills and challenges to learn and overcome; while some characters specialize in speed and acceleration, other vehicles have better maneuverability. Completing character challenges will also unlock other goodies such as new tracks. Helping you in this mission are a series of upgrades that increase the speed of the vehicle and blow away the competition. Some power-ups, however, are dangerous and will hinder the character. Modes include Standard Race, Knockout Race, Lap Trial, Endurance, Collection, Countdown and Survival. While Standard Racing mode is full of challenges, Knockout mode is a tournament-based competition where the last person on each lap is kicked out of the race. The mission in Lap Trial is to beat the best lap times. As the name suggests, Endurance mode requires the go-karts to finish a certain number of laps before time runs out. While Gathering involves hunting laughing Weebles, Countdown is a timed competition where all courses must be completed. Every time a rival is hit by weapon fire in Survival mode, they are eliminated! Disney/Pixar's Toy Story Racer also features various tournaments and a two-person multiplayer mode. In the latter option, you and a friend can compete in a split-screen head-to-head. With an inverse function, paths can also be traveled backwards. The gameplay options are the heart of the game and are quite extensive. The ways you can play Toy Story Racer will slowly be revealed to you as you acquire green army tokens. The game unlocks normal and reverse modes, as well as new characters. The modes themselves are full of variety, even though they all essentially control the same. Each mode offers different experiences, such as Survival mode where it's one hit and you're out or Collection mode where you run around trying to collect as many weebles as possible. The pace at which these challenges are unlocked is also solid, perfect for both young and old.
