In Grand Theft Auto, the player takes on the role of a small-time criminal trying to make it big with the mafia. Stealing cars, doing jobs for gangsters, and generally acting antisocial are the path to success. The action takes place across six levels spread across three different cities, each based on a real-life US city: Liberty City (based on New York), San Andreas (based on San Francisco), and Vice City (based on Miami). A certain score must be achieved to complete a level. Stealing cars and crashing into traffic, driving over pedestrians, and killing cops all add to your score, but the most important points are earned by completing jobs. Answering phones or getting into special cars gives you mission assignments, ranging from simple "skid-slipping" jobs to bank robberies and murders. Completing a mission increases your score significantly, and the score multiplier also increases, so completing the next crime earns you even more points.
