NHL 09 introduces the EA Sports Hockey League (EASHL), a 6 vs. 6 online multiplayer game mode that allows players from all over the world to join a unique community. If you don't put in enough effort or are unselfish, you will soon be cut from the team! On the other hand, if you play well, you will be wanted by other teams. Using the same dynamic view as the Be A Pro (Career) mode, thanks to a camera that provides a third-person view, each player can experience the game directly on the field.

In NHL 09 The Skill Stick system has been refined to provide an unsurpassed level of control on defense. The Defensive Skill Stick will allow the player to have 360-degree control of the stick to effectively intercept a pass or perform a poke-check. On the offensive side, the Skill Stick adds the ability to emulate feints to the arsenal of shots.

Players now have the ability to pull off spectacular plays with the ability to side-hit the puck, fooling the goalie with clever feints.
