Keeping Donald happy is as easy as raising cats, but everyone's favorite embarrassment goes too far when the smelly wizard Merlock gives Daisy a nap. To add insult to injury, Donald's arrogant cousin Gladstone Gander vows to save Daisy. Thus begins Donald's great race to get to Daisy first and foil Merlock's nefarious plans.
Donald Duck follows in the hallowed footsteps of Kirby 64 and Yoshi's Story by being a 2-1/2D side-scroller. For the most part, Donald can move left, right, up, and down, but he cannot move closer to or further away from the player. By limiting Donald's movement, developers at Disney Interactive were able to focus the N64's impressive graphical capabilities on creating gorgeous, richly detailed environments. An Expansion Pak makes the game even grander.
Donald Duck breaks ranks with his esteemed predecessors, however, by offering several levels where Donald can move in and out of the screen, but not sideways. Disney’s Tarzan had a few of these levels, most notably in The Baboon Chase, but Donald Duck offers much more than this new perspective. While judging jumps on moving platforms can be a matter of literal success, plenty of extra lives and save points keep the frustration quotient low.
Donald can roam freely in the cramped quarters of Gyro Gearloose's lab. From this underground world he can teleport to the various levels, each of which has multiple levels.
As with most platformers, Donald is mostly about hunting down the end of each level and collecting various items along the way, including toys under Merlock's terrible spell and stars that give Donald extra lives. Most importantly, he'll need to find the missing pieces of the teleporter that will teleport him to the level's boss.
Disney Interactive has packed the game with plenty of Donald elements, including appearances by scampi nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie and the bossy Beagle Boys. Troublemaker Magica DaSpell even gets her own mansion. You can also expect a ton of sound effects when the game hits store shelves this fall.
Fighting enemies generates little cartoonish clouds. If forced to wait, happy Donald will dream of Daisy, but if he has taken damage, he will deploy his dukes to show that he is eager to fight. And look at that sailor cap. Whether it falls, floats or spins, it seems to have a life of its own!
