The adventure revolves around Luigi, Mario's less famous brother, and his efforts to solve the mysteries of a large haunted house and find the missing Mario. Luigi must advance through the house, from room to room, solving the puzzles he finds along the way. Soon Luigi comes across some of the ghostly inhabitants of the house, the ghosts come in all shapes and sizes but, above all, strong personalities.

Luckily, Luigi is saved by the eccentric Professor E. Gad, who gives him all the explanations about the mysterious house. The professor becomes Luigi's advisor, guiding him through the game and helping him whenever he can via the Game Boy "Horror", a modified Game Boy that is used to see the game map, collected items, etc. Gad introduces Luigi to his special vacuum cleaner, the Poltergust 3000, a very important part of the game.

Luigi's flashlight is used to stun the ghosts, and the vacuum cleaner then sucks them in. The ghosts, however, do not give up without a fight, and will struggle to free themselves. Luigi must get away from the vacuum cleaner, which will pull them in like fish on a hook.

As you progress through the game, you'll be able to upgrade your vacuum cleaner, which can suck up and then spit out water, fire and ice, an ability that will be essential to solving some of the game's puzzles. With over 55 different rooms to explore, tons of different ghosts to catch and brief appearances by your favourite Mario Bros. characters, this game is set to be a huge success when it launches in Europe.
