Super Mario Sunshine begins with Mario packing his bags with red shirts and blue pants for a well-earned two-week vacation with Princess Peach to a sunny tropical island. However, rest and relaxation don't last long. A vile scoundrel is destroying and polluting the pristine land, and to make matters worse, he's a spitting image of Mario himself! With his mustache ruffled with anger, Mario decides to take action to clean up the island... and his honor!

But none of Mario's adventures would be complete without one extraordinary innovation, and in Super Mario Sunshine , we find it in that curious water pump strapped to the back of our corpulent plumber. This water-powered device not only helps Mario to tame the mud mess created by the fake Mario, but with its powerful jet it creates some of the most beautiful water effects ever seen on screen. Furthermore, the hydraulic backpack can also serve as a jet propulsion to travel in the crystalline skies above the island, help Mario in acrobatics from one vine to another, propel our hero in a suit over ponds from one lily pad to another... and perform during Mario's mission a series of as yet unrevealed secret functions to restore the power of Shine to the island.

In the course of Super Mario Sunshine , Mario will run into many of his old friends and... joy of joys, he will hop around the island with Yoshi in a race to squash the enemy. And he will not fail to show off a series of new moves, including sensational spinning jumps and an improved belly slide that takes advantage of the slimy mud that covers the ground.
