The fourth game in Activision and Neversoft’s seminal skateboarding series is designed to add to and refine the already polished gameplay that made Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater one of the most important video game franchises of its time. Many of these improvements are in line with the advancements made in previous THPS sequels, while others may surprise longtime fans of the series.

In Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, environments are designed to feel even bigger and more interactive, with less concern for time constraints and more emphasis on exploration. The game also adds new tricks to the pro skater's repertoire, allowing for huge, point-scoring combos. The "spine transfer" challenges skaters to go up one side of a double ramp and down the other. Players will be able to perform tricks off of moving cars and other interactive elements in the game's various levels with new finesse.

Perhaps the biggest departure from the winning format established in previous titles is found in THPS4’s Career mode. Instead of racing against the clock to complete separate mission objectives, as in previous iterations, objectives are further integrated and delivered within the context of the levels themselves. Without conventional time limits, pro skaters can explore each environment in greater depth, stopping to talk to the many characters they encounter. It’s often these NPC characters who assign the level’s objectives, allowing for more personal, RPG-style motivation and rewards.

As with previous versions of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, this 2002 version also includes edit modes that allow players to customize their avatars and design their own skate parks.
